What categories are there for STEAM student projects? Living Things (if using animals, please be mindful of ethical and safety guidelines), Physical Universe (chemistry, physics, earth and space science), Robotics and Computation (programming, math, statistics), Makery and Things (creating STEAM related items–3-D printing, architecture, woodworking, etc.), and the Engineering Design Process (apply the EDP to your own project). What grades can be involved? The HAAS STEAM Expo welcomes submissions from K-8 students. K-6 students will visit the Expo as part of the school day. Any HAAS students and their families are welcome to join us at 1 pm for the STEAM Expo. It opens to the community at 2 pm.

What resources are available to support student STEAM projects? We will provide students who filled out the registration form with a project board the week before winter break. See these Board examples from past Online State STEM Expo projects. We will send out periodic tips and helps as well. Your child may choose to use additional help in the afterschool Homework Club or STEAM club if they are enrolled in those. Feel free to reach out to the STEAM teacher and TA with questions.

What are the judging criteria for student projects? Projects will be judged the day before the event. Feedback will be available for students at project pickup. See the judging rubric below.

Can my child enter their project at the state level? Yes, if in grades K-5! One K-5 project will be selected to be sent to the State STEM Expo. K-5 students can also submit their project to the online State STEM Expo by March 1st.

Will my child visit the STEAM Expo as part of school? K-6 ‘ohana classes will have an opportunity during school on February 6th for a visit to the Expo!

Can we visit the STEAM Expo? Yes! HAAS families are welcome to come at 1 pm on February 6th. It will open to the community as well from 2-4 pm.

What is different from last year? There will not be a formal award ceremony and students will not need to speak to judges. We will open to the public for the last 2 hours of the event. Enjoy the outdoor STEAM play area!
